Curtis Jacobson's Career at Volvo Trucks

Our founder was once a Lead Engineer at Volvo Trucks. His favorite assignments were working in the skunk-works that designed Volvo's flagship model, and later building concept-trucks and doing R&D on new safety technologies. This photo was taken on a frozen-over lake near the town of Arjeplog, Sweden where Curtis tested some of these systems.

Have you ever thought about that old cliché: "knowledge is power"? Most people would be surprised how little automotive engineers think about power. The diesel fuel stored in a truck's fuel tank, or the electrical energy stored in its battery, is not the focus of an automotive engineers' daily work. Instead, it's more important to focus on converting power to torque, torque to traction, and traction into safe, smooth, controlled motion. Automotive engineers focus not on power itself, but how power is used. That's analogous to the Storyboard Toys philosophy of educational toys. We don't design toys or games to feed kids facts. We help kids develop higher-level thinking skills. ArtHouse is a great teaching aid because it helps kids strengthen their abilities to create, communicate and evaluate new ideas.
