ESOL Resources for Parents, Teaching Aids for Writing and English Language Learners

Students Apply Vocabulary-Word Labels to Art   (artist unknown)

Abby Kass, a teacher at PS-64 in New York's South Bronx, challenges her predominantly Spanish language speaking ELL and ESOL students to identify and illustrate vocabulary terms in ArtHouse wall decorations. Student-made repositionable labels (i.e. "Post-Its") are her special innovation. Abby's students lift ArtHouse's roof off and set it aside to present and discuss their work in context. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs... students love to explain their creations! They identify vocabulary terms in each other's designs. Sometimes they write-out whole captions.

ArtHouse has proven extremely effective with Abby's students. As Mona Brooks wrote in Drawing with Children: "According to research in the field of language acquisition, you can learn information eight times faster and retain it eight times longer if you draw what you are learning about."

ArtHouse is a flexible and powerful teaching aide for all elementary school classrooms. It enhances design projects, pretend-play, storytelling, & student presentations. Use ArtHouse for teaching English as a second language to beginners.
