Bar Mitzvah Pictures: Celebrant's Father Holding Torah Scrolls, Synagogue Lamp

Religious Education: an Example Student Project on Jewish Bar Mitzvah Traditions

Did you notice the synagogue lamp hanging down from the ceiling? It's a year-round reminder or a favorite traditional story. After the Jews reconquered Jerusalem they cleansed and rededicated their Temple. Although they ground only enough sacred oil to burn in the synagogue lamp for one day, it miraculously burned for eight! This story has become tightly connected with Chanukah, the winter festival of lights. During Chanukah, Jews remember the deliverance of Jerusalem and Palestine from the Assyrian Greeks.
