Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation (NVHC) in Reston originated in 1966. It shared
space with other congregations until its first building was completed in 1981. Located
on three acres, the original building consists of a chapel, thirteen classrooms on
two floors, and administrative offices. A 1989 addition gave the congregation a new
sanctuary, social hall, large kitchen, library/conference room, and additional offices.
Constructed of wood with a stucco exterior, the temple can accommodate 500 worshipers.
Reston is a sixties-era "planned community" 18 miles west of Washington DC, with a
population of approximately 70,000. Largely ajacent to the town of Herndon, Reston is
within Fairfax County but very near the border with Loudoun County. The synagogue
serves this very dynamic, diverse, and rapidly growing community.
