Papel Picado: 6th grade social studies activities

Papel Picado is the Traditional Mexican Folk Art of Paper Cutting

This example was evidently cut entirely with scissors. You can tell because all of the cut-out shapes are symmetrical about fold-lines. Can you figure out how many different places the paper had to be folded and un-folded? Making elaborate Mexican-style papel picado with scissors actually requires more skill, care and planning than using a razor-knife or punches.
