Arrival of the Magi with their Gifts at the Nativity Crèche Scene
Tommy (age 11) and his siblings made their ArtHouse into an elaborate nativity crèche.
According to Christian tradition, wise men from Eastern lands traveled to the manger
where the infant Jesus lay to honor him with ceremonial gifts. The gospels conflict
about when, where and how they arrived... but the story is still an interesting aside
to the overall Christmas story.
This panel shows the names and respective gifts attributed to each of the three men.
Although the names of the wise men and their respective gifts don't actually appear
in the Bible, they've been repeated over the centuries. They are: Balthazar (with myrrh),
Gaspar (with frankincense), and Melchior (with gold, silk and gems). Myrrh and
frankincense are dried tree saps from two kinds of trees that grow in Somalia. They
were burned in Biblical times for their nice, distinctive aromas.
