About Rose Windows
Large round windows at the ends of cathedrals are generically called "rose windows".
Historically, the rose has been a symbol of Mary, mother of Christ. Sometimes Madonna figures
are shown in these windows but stained glass artists have also substituted floral forms or
entirely different themes into rose windows. Because these windows are especially important
as a focal point for the building, design and construction would usually be overseen by the
most honored artisans.
In a classroom, you might reserve rose window assignment to reward special behavior,
or suggest rose window design as an extra credit project.
